I presented a paper “Ornamentally Embodying Trans/Asian Artifice” as part of a panel <Eastern Exploits: Troubling Orientalisms in Trans Studies> chaired by Dr. Jillana Enteen at Chicago, IL, USA. This presentation resists a nativist impulse to look for an authentically Asian case of transness, found both in everyday life and in academia. Rather, I contend that Asianness, as a process of racialization informed through feminization, can be productively reconceptualized as inseparable from the claims of inauthenticity for trans femininity.
