I published a review of a musical The Butterfly on the Bund 1939, a first Chinese original musical licensed in South Korea, in Theatre Journal. I addressed the musical’s creative use of queer femininity in this anti-colonial lesbian period drama, as well as the shared history of Japanese colonialism between Korea and China as grounds of the musical’s success. In addition, I hereby acknowledge and express my gratitude that I could attend the musical in Seoul thanks to Cornell East Asia Program’s research travel grant in 2024.
